Entertainment Avenue: Yoh Bestie Review - Long Overdue Romance!

This is the incase you missed it edition, the late review! So if you haven't watched it, there are great reasons to and also SPOILERS so beware...

Official Promotional Poster.

While we've seen many romcoms with this kind of storyline. We can't ignore how there are many ways to make coffee. It may seem cliche/ overly done but how many love songs are there? This movie is said to be unoriginal by many but the recipe or steps to falling in love are one we are all familiar with.

After a successful 1st Season of Yoh! Christmas where Thando was completely oblivious to her connection with longtime best friend Charles, she went on a journey to find the one and let's say her she was only setting herself up for breakup. Because no matter who she chose, it was doomed to fail, her choices were at times desperate to find love or had the wrong motivations. Her stir fry was definitely a salad drizzled in oil, low heat? More like set to chill.
The realization finally came that her guy has always been there just that he was in the friend zone. Now Charles has found himself a successful and mature like wine lady in Rea who seems out of his League and they make a cosy pair at first till the layers of cake icing start reveal a bitter sponge cake with a flavour of incompatible and what were they thinking, yeah great on paper but the execution of reality promises a rough romance. Charles made sacrifices in order to fit into the man Rea wants, pretending to love prawns? What happened to Jamali's Love Me for Me?

On the b-side we've got Riri and Bheki who brought the cackles and charm as they're a fiery couple with hearty, expressive and undeniable chemistry. They definitely were the music of the party, they turned things up, their scenes were standing ovation brilliant, very relatable characters with fun and their storyline was really engaging. Yonda Thomas comes in as Nas' an entrepreneur who definitely has you head scratching, a man of many hats? Jack of all trades? He was a great addition, the tequila that didn't wanna give Thando hangover only a good time, he's adventurous and a romantic, almost wanted him to be her guy, they had the connection, not a sign of bad coverage though he did feel like that guy you meet at the bachelorette party who gives you a temporary high, there's so much to explore with this character, add him to the friend group. Spin-off with RiRi & Bheki?

What stood out for me was how Rea wasn't the casualty as seen in most movies, when the one partner gets left for the other there's always that whole bitter pill to swallow, we definitely need movies of people who were left at the altar, the trauma they go through and how they find healing. Rea wasn't oblivious though she initially felt threatened by Thando, her awareness helped her walk away than try to stand in the way, the way we got an impression that she's getting ready to walk down the aisle when she was really walking away is definitely an epic surprise and twist, I loved it.

A lot of the recurring characters from the 1st Season took a backseat like most of Thando's colleagues who were involved in her quest to find love. Plus I hope we see Charles and Thando's relationship playing on-screen, I'm tired of the 'they got together and that's it' take us through their ups and downs.

Yoh Bestie is a modern romcom with a few classic tropes which we love, it has deep resonance and gives you the butterfly experience, you'll be entertained. It's popcorn gold and we give it a 7/10. Charles' point of view should've been explored more, we only saw Thando's and it didn't drag out but a stretch was needed for an extra layer of cheese.
