Entertainment Avenue: R.J Decker Hits all the right Moves and Scores 2nd Season with Stunning First Impressions!
Entertainment Avenue: R.J Decker Brings Grounded. Classic Best Written TV Back
Score: 9.5/10
With only 9 episodes which somehow feel like a full season due to decent runtime that stretches without feeling like it's trying to keep up with barely anything to give. R.J Decker has some really great plot developments and strays from the typical - smart guy turns into consultant territory, no it's not a male version of hit ABC show High Potential but this one has its own energy which gives you a really captivating watch.
We start off the 1st Season with R.J outside the courthouse and meets Emi who seems genuinely concerned and there's instant chemistry though she does feel like a trap, he gives in only for a big swerve that lands him in prison and this plays into an even bigger story than initially expected. With Emi, she is loveable but after screwing the title character she gets well deserved heat and their conflict doesn't get easily swept aside with a redundant "she's hot and rich" sexual tension wins weak plot, they actually go into the confrontation which helps build this storyline and gives it a solid start.
R.J also doesn't have fancy gadgets, no rich friend to upgrade his life like on Blue Collar (Great show by the way) he instead gets taken in by his ex wife who seems fond of him and with some resurfacing feelings it's only a hinted moment of jealousy disguised as concern and again we love that it doesn't jump into love triangle territory where the new wife feels threatened by cliches instead they keep it to a minimum so as to avoid filler scenes that would bring laughs or beef that wouldn't pay off.
As we mentioned, he doesn't get an upgrade, he has what is considered low budget wardrobe. He doesn't move into a fancy penthouse as payment for what emi did and we absolutely love it. Keep him grounded, he gets to showcase how great of a P.I he is and episode 8 reminds us that though we brings in the police they never take the lead as she gives R.J time to shine as he explains how the suspect was murdered, such awareness helps that others characters come in and are competent but they are positioned so well so the lead has his moments of brilliance without dumbing down everyone else in the room.
We're happy it was renewed for Season 2. I came across the trailer on Facebook and the poster was enticing with it's bright colours and retro feel, captured the essence of the show. Great acting, no unnecessary gun fights, speed chases or beatdowns, instead there's room to tell the story and not be too much exposition or info dump, it's neatly tucked in and gives formal, fun, procedural and intense. Episode 7 brought in Emi's father, he's menacing that I hoped he goes down quickly but we do need him, he's necessary he gives us that edge of your seat chill, because now R.J is under threat and his newly found romance isn't promising roses but also another shade of red in liquid form: blood.
